Jackie Cooper, who most of us knew either as a Little Rascal or as Daily Planet Editor Perry White from the Christopher Reeve SUPERMAN movies, died last week at 88. Which got me thinking again about what a mark those first two SUPERMAN movies left on me as a kid.
So much so that, when Gabriel Rodriguez and I were adapting Clive Barker‘s THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW book a few years back, a scene at the end called for a crotchety newspaper editor. So I asked Gabe to make the editor look like Cooper’s Perry White. Because at that point, no one better came to mind (J.K. Simmons as J.J.J. from the SPIDER-MAN movies is a close second but it’s hard to beat those childhood memories(.
And you can see that, as always, Gabe nailed the look of the character. Great Caeser’s ghost, rest in peace, Jackie Cooper.
Another cool Jackie Cooper tidbit. He requested that his star be removed from the Walk of Fame when they denied a star to Paul Robeson, who was an African American pioneer in silent films.
